The holidays are the time of year that many people look forward to all year long. But the season can be busy, stressful, and even dreaded by some. Here are some tips on how to stay healthy during the holidays:
- Take time off - The construction industry is generally fortunate enough to have holidays off, but employees should consider taking additional vacation time off as well. Research shows that nearly half of US workers don’t fully use their allotted time off, so there’s a good chance you may have some unused time off yourself. Plan your time off and do your best to unplug and untether from work when doing so.
- Stay active - Although it may not be easy, try to stay active during this time. Whether it’s keeping your usual workout routine, exploring a new activity or area, or just walking the dog, physical activity can help reduce stress, boost energy, and even prevent weight gain. Whatever you choose, keep your activity enjoyable, timely, and realistic.
- Keep things in moderation - The holidays can be a time of indulgence, which sometimes leads to overindulgence. From holiday meals, to work parties and celebrations and gift shopping, it may be tempting to eat, drink, and spend more than usual. Although a little indulgence in some areas may be part of the fun of the season, it’s good to stay aware, and if there are any specific areas that you believe you may have challenges with ahead of time, consider asking a friend or family member to help you stay accountable.
- Be sensitive of others - Not everyone looks forward to the holidays for various reasons, and furthermore, it’s not even recognized as a “holiday season” for many. For these reasons, remember to be sensitive to how others may view this time of year. On one hand, your awareness may prevent conflict and tension which can help you stay healthy, and on the other hand, your kindness just might spread a universal cheer to others, which is something everyone can agree on.
- Know where to find help - Finally, if the season becomes overwhelming and you find yourself needing help, there are resources available. Consider speaking with family, friends, or (if employed) someone in Human Resources. Many employers offer a free Employee Assistance Plan (EAP) which generally provides telephone and in-person counseling and other services for employees and their families all free of charge. Use personal networks like church groups or other organizations you may be a part of, which often offer specific resources. Ultimately, if you are in a crisis or in need of immediate help, here is a list of some possible resources that may help.
Of course, these are only a few ways to stay healthy during the holidays (or any time of year really). Whatever you do, wherever you do it, and with whomever you choose you do it with, enjoy this wonderful time of year!
