Alcorn’s culture is something we pride ourselves on and helps drive every one of us to do our best. It’s what makes us unique, and is the sum of our values, traditions, beliefs, interactions, behaviors and attitudes. Alcorn Construction developed The Alcorn Way to be deliberate and unified with the behaviors that make us successful. We review one value as a team each Monday and learn ways to apply them to our lives and work. One of them is focused on safety:

Alcorn Way #05 - Be vigilant about safety.
Know and practice the safety procedures for your job. Watch out for the safety of your teammates and our subs. Never take shortcuts that compromise your safety or the safety of your teammates or our customers. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.

We provide safety and stability through rigorous training that Superintendents and Project Managers attend. All Alcorn Superintendents are OSHA 30-hour certified and given authority to stop work on any project if someone’s safety is in question. Additionally, they perform regular site safety walks to make sure all workers are doing their jobs safely. All Alcorn Project Managers are OSHA 10-hour certified and review their projects for safety every time they are on site. Along with the trainings and certifications, Alcorn also sets guidelines for every project:

  • Projects are kept clean and free of debris
  • Safety consultant firm, SFI Compliance, performs regular third-party site review, training, and in-depth knowledge when complex situations arise
  • Every OAC meeting is started with a discussion of site safety and security
  • Job Hazard Analyses are performed for all hazardous situations and for work around the public
  • Every project has a written emergency response plan

We also have an Alcorn Safety Orientation training for any subcontractor working alongside us. Alcorn, in addition to OSHA, sets safety rules for them to adhere to, including:

  • Personal Protective Equipment
    • Hard hats
    • Safety glasses (when applicable)
    • High visibility vest
    • Proper footwear
    • Gloves (when applicable)
  • Fall Protection
    • Protection for elevated work
    • Ladder safety
    • Surrounding hazards
    • Leading edge work
    • Job hazard analysis
  • Equipment & Tools
    • Training and licensing
    • Equipment use
    • Inspections and maintenance
    • Hazard communication
    • Hazardous communication & SDS sheets
    • Training for hazardous material and tasks
    • Proper use of PPE
  • Excavations
    • Trained inspections
    • Regulated trench excavations
    • Proper barricades
  • Weather / Heat & Cold Safety
    • Extreme weather warning conditions
    • Encouraging hydration during hot conditions
    • Recommending layered clothing during cold conditions

With all these rules and regulations, it may seem like common sense to some and overbearing to others. But we have these rules in place so everyone knows the proper procedures and expectations that need to be followed every time they are on one of our job sites. We want to ensure that everyone returns home to their loved ones every night. Nowhere are our values of personal responsibility and taking ownership more important than when it comes to job site safety. That’s the Alcorn Way.
