Alcorn Construction is an expert in the construction of tilt-up construction projects. Alcorn’s first tilt project was awarded in 2011, and since then, it’s been a staple in our project portfolio with dozens of projects built. On top of that,our staff has decades of combined experience in concrete tilt-up work. But most people don’t realize how valuable tilt-up style construction is.

Tilt-up construction is a method where concrete wall panels are cast on-site and then lifted into place using cranes. It has has been around since the early 1900s and really took off after World War II because it’s both cost-effective and fast. This method is incredibly versatile, used for everything from warehouses and schools to office buildings, retail centers,and even homes. One of its biggest perks is the speed of construction since the panels are cast right on-site and can be lifted into place as soon as they’re cured. This not only speeds things up but also cuts costs by reducing the need for extensive formwork and scaffolding.

Modern tilt-up construction offers a lot of design flexibility, allowing for various architectural finishes like textured surfaces, colored concrete, and embedded materials. Buildings constructed with this method are known for their durability and can withstand natural disasters like earthquakes and hurricanes. Plus, it’s more environmentally friendly because it reduces the need for transporting materials and allows for the use of local resources.

Depending on the size of projects, the concrete walls can be quite large and heavy. Typically, panels can reach heights of up to 96-feet and widths of 34-feet. The weight of the panels can be substantial, with some panels weighing over 32,000 pounds!

The process for tilt-up construction can seem quite daunting at first, but it’s far simpler than it seems, here’s a simplified breakdown of our process.

  1. Alignment - We work with customers to discuss their goals and come to an understanding about the project.
  1. Planning - Detailed planning is crucial. This includes site evaluation, engineering, and preparing the construction schedule.
  1. Execution
    • Site Preparation - The site is prepared by completing site work and pouring the concrete foundation and floor slabs.
    • Forming Panels - Concrete panels are formed on the ground using wood forms and rebar.
    • Concrete Pouring - Concrete is poured into the forms and allowed to cure.
    • Lifting Panels - Once the concrete has reached sufficient strength, the panels are lifted into place using a crane.
    • Panel Bracing - The panels are temporarily braced until the roof and other structural elements are in place.
    • Structure Completion - The panels are permanently affixed to foundation and the space between them is sealed. Roofing dries in the space and completes the overall structure.
    • Finishing - The interior and exterior of the building can be finished with various materials to meet design specifications.
  2. Support - Alcorn supports customers through the warranty period of the project and provides expert advice for any future changes or projects.

While concrete tilt-up construction is most common in North America, tilt-up construction is also popular in the Caribbean, Australia, New Zealand, and is catching on in places like southern Asia and the Middle East.
